Virus Targets Skype Users

by Ben Lucier on September 10, 2007

Less than one month ago, a Skype outage that affected more than 200 million users during a 48 hour period during prevented Skype users from making calls and even signing on.  In the end, Skype reported the outage was caused by a large number of users rebooting their computers after a Windows update, but that doesn’t make it OK.

Now earlier today, the CBC writes about a new threat to the Skype community: a virus, passing itself off as a JPEG picture, tricks users into downloading the virus, thereby enabling it to self propagate.  Geeeeez.

It’s been a tough month for Ebay/Skype.  Two major events in less than a month.  How many more events can Skype take before the industry starts likening Skype reliability to that of a Microsoft operating system?
